It has been an encouraging and productive period for Simon Penney Waste Consulting, with progress across strategic consulting, professional mentoring and international collaboration.

Supporting the Development of a New Waste Strategy for Nunavut

I am currently contributing to work supporting the development of a new waste strategy for Nunavut, Canada’s largest and most northerly territory.

Waste management in Nunavut presents a distinctive combination of geographic, environmental, social and operational challenges. Its widely dispersed communities, limited transport connections, high costs, sensitive Arctic environment and restricted infrastructure mean that conventional waste-management approaches cannot simply be transferred from southern Canada.

The work requires a long-term and integrated approach that considers:

• The needs and circumstances of individual communities

• Inuit knowledge, priorities and meaningful participation

• Waste policy, regulation and governance

• Existing services and infrastructure

• Transportation and logistics

• Environmental and public-health protection

• Sustainable technology and infrastructure options

• Workforce development and local capacity

• Financial and economic sustainability

• A practical pathway from strategy to implementation

It is a privilege to contribute my experience of island, remote and international waste systems to this important work. Further information will be shared when appropriate and subject to client confidentiality.

Mentoring That Is Helping Create New Opportunities

My professional mentoring work is also producing encouraging results.

Mentees are clarifying their ambitions, strengthening their professional positioning and identifying new opportunities within the waste and resource-management sector.

Two recent mentees have confirmed new employment after only two or three months of mentoring. The individual’s own ability, commitment and hard work made the achievement possible, but it has been rewarding to support the process through career planning, interview preparation and a clearer understanding of the opportunities available.

Effective mentoring does not promise a particular outcome. It creates a structured space in which professionals can:

• Examine their experience and ambitions

• Identify realistic career pathways

• Present their abilities more effectively

• Prepare for interviews and important conversations

• Make informed professional decisions

• Develop a longer-term career strategy

These early outcomes demonstrate the value of combining practical sector knowledge with focused, individual support.
