Value People. Protect the Planet. Work with Purpose.

Vision, Mission and Values

People. Planet. Purpose.

Simon Penney Waste Consulting helps create a future where resources are valued, waste is prevented wherever possible, and effective waste management and circular-economy systems support healthier communities, stronger economies and a sustainable world.

The consultancy is guided by three connected priorities: People, Planet and Purpose.

These principles shape Simon’s assignments, advice and relationships with clients, associates, communities and professionals.

Vision

The consultancy envisions a world where waste is not simply discarded, but recognised as evidence of lost resources, value and opportunity.

Simon contributes to waste-management and circular-economy systems that protect the environment, strengthen communities, create dignified livelihoods and use finite resources responsibly.

This requires practical solutions backed by effective policy, capable institutions, appropriate investment, meaningful participation, and the knowledge and skills to sustain change.

Simon Penney Waste Consulting aims to become a trusted, values-led international practice, connecting experience, ideas and people to address complex waste, resource-management and development challenges.

Mission

The consultancy helps governments, organisations, businesses and communities turn ambitious environmental and social objectives into practical, locally appropriate action.

Drawing on over 30 years’ experience, Simon provides independent strategic advice, builds partnerships, strengthens professional capacity and helps clients move from challenge to effective implementation.

The goal is not simply another report or strategy, but:

  • Better-informed decisions
  • Stronger institutions
  • Improved professional capability
  • Practical, achievable implementation
  • Lasting environmental, social and economic value

Why the Consultancy Undertakes This Work

Simon Penney Waste Consulting is founded on a belief in the inherent dignity and value of every person and the living world.

Simon’s Christian faith informs his belief in a divine spark within each person and a shared responsibility to protect the environments and resources on which life depends. The consultancy welcomes people of every faith and none.

Regardless of faith, gender, race, colour, nationality, background, disability, identity or other human-made divisions, all people share responsibility to one another and the world they inhabit.

Simon believes humanity has a divine mandate to act as a responsible steward—not absolute owner—of the Earth and its resources.

This commitment also draws on the Seven Generations principle within several Indigenous traditions: decisions should honour past wisdom while considering their consequences for generations to come.

Responsible stewardship requires society to:

  • Use resources wisely
  • Protect and repair the natural world
  • Respect the knowledge of previous generations
  • Make decisions with future generations in mind
  • Prepare responsibly and hopefully for the future

As humanity’s reach expands, these principles may also guide its relationship with other worlds.

Exploration should never become exploitation. Progress must remain grounded in humility, fairness, dignity, responsibility and care.

Values

People

Waste management is fundamentally about people.

It affects public health, household costs, working conditions, livelihoods and the quality of places where people live.

Simon believes effective solutions should be developed with people, not simply for them. This means listening, respecting local knowledge, recognising cultural and economic realities, and considering how decisions affect different parts of a community.

He is committed to a just, inclusive transition towards a circular economy.

Worldwide, waste pickers and informal workers—including women, migrants, children and other vulnerable people—often lead material recovery and protect communities from unmanaged waste. Yet they frequently work in unsafe conditions without recognition, security, protection or fair reward.

Better waste-management systems must not exclude or further disadvantage these individuals and communities. They should create pathways towards:

  • Dignity
  • Safer working conditions
  • Fair economic opportunities
  • Social protection
  • Education and professional development
  • Recognition of existing knowledge
  • Meaningful participation in decisions

Environmental progress should improve people’s lives, not come at their expense.

Planet

Preventing waste and using resources intelligently reduces pollution, protects ecosystems, lowers greenhouse-gas emissions and eases pressure on land, oceans and finite resources.

Environmental ambition must be translated into workable systems.

Simon supports evidence-led, proportionate approaches suited to local circumstances. This is especially important in islands, remote communities and emerging economies, where solutions designed for large or wealthy cities may not fit.

Protecting the planet requires long-term vision and practical action.

Purpose

Business and professional expertise should serve a purpose beyond commercial success.

For Simon Penney Waste Consulting, success means:

  • Helping clients make better decisions
  • Strengthening people and institutions
  • Creating practical, lasting improvements
  • Supporting environmental, social and economic value
  • Contributing to outcomes beyond an individual assignment

Purpose also requires integrity.

This means being honest about evidence and uncertainty, recognising limitations, recommending what is appropriate rather than fashionable, and considering who benefits from—or bears the cost of—decisions.
