Guernsey Global Convention on Island Waste Management and Circular Economy
Late 2027 into 2028 - Expressions of Interest
The proposed Guernsey Global Convention on Island Waste Management and Circular Economy would bring together island communities from around the world to exchange experience, build partnerships and identify approaches that work in island settings. Planned for late 2027 or 2028, subject to interest and partner discussions, the convention would welcome government representatives, waste professionals, businesses, researchers, community organisations and development partners.
Guernsey provides a compelling setting. Its experience of reshaping waste services, increasing recycling and managing the realities of an island system offers a useful starting point for wider discussion. The convention would also recognise the considerable diversity between islands, from remote communities and small island developing states to larger island economies.
Potential themes include waste prevention, extended producer responsibility, organics, plastics, marine litter, hazardous waste, tourism, climate resilience, financing and appropriate technology. Discussions would connect policy with delivery, exploring what succeeds, what proves difficult and what can be adapted elsewhere.
The ambition is to create lasting value beyond the event through professional networks, shared learning and opportunities for joint projects.
